ADIDAS Flagship Store

Located on Victoria Island, Lagos, the ADIDAS Lagos Flagship Store is a 380 sqm adaptive-reuse project that transforms a 1970s building into ADIDAS' first flagship store in West Africa. Developed following a design competition, the project brings together Nigerian art, culture, urban identity with the global character of the ADIDAS brand.
Drawing inspiration from Lagos as a centre of creativity and innovation, the design explores themes of upcycling, regeneration and resourcefulness embedded in the city's urban fabric. Rather than replacing the existing structure, the project retains and extends it, demonstrating how adaptive reuse can support more sustainable urban development. The intervention expands the retail footprint through a steel-and-glass extension while creating flexible spaces for commercial and cultural activities.
The architecture is defined by a façade of solid and perforated corrugated aluminium sheets, reinterpreting a material commonly found across Lagos. Inspired by local cultures of reuse and adaptation, the façade transforms an everyday material into a contemporary architectural expression. Integrated LED lighting animates the ridged surface after dark, while the perforated screen filters daylight, reduces solar heat gain and creates a dynamic optical effect in which transparency shifts according to the viewer's position.
The project extends beyond retail to create a destination for sport, culture and community. Existing Roystonea regia trees were retained, while a basketball half-court and event space provide opportunities for public engagement. Solar power and wastewater treatment systems further enhance environmental performance.
Through the adaptive reuse of an existing structure and the reinterpretation of local materials through patterns, the ADIDAS store demonstrates how architecture can mediate between global brand identity and local culture, creating an expression that is distinctly Lagosian while remaining internationally relevant.
