Sophie Schrattenecker is a practicing architect and architectural researcher. She lives and works in Austria where she is an active member of planning processes on site from start to finish. Research and travels continuously inspire her built and written work embedded in historical contexts.

Sophie was born in Upper Austria in 1990 and grew up in Vienna. Between 2008 and 2009 she lived and worked in Ecuador. After returning she studied architecture at the University of Arts in Linz and did field research on Southern American bamboo construction in Latinamerica in 2013. For her bachelor thesis on the subject of Ecuadorian ribbon-built villages she was given the Blue Award 2016. Sophie signed in for Classical and Ancient Studies in Salzburg between 2015 and 2017 as second course of studies. She finished her Master of Architecture in 2017 with her thesis about the “Cañada Real“, an informal settlement located at the outskirts of Spain’s capital city Madrid. In 2018 she completed her postgraduate master in “Architecture and Historic Urban Environments“ at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. Sophie has been working with Herbert Schrattenecker since 2018, gaining substantial experience in detailed planning as well as construction site management. In 2018 Sophie co-founded the international journal „Urbanogram, Journal of the Built Environment“ together with six colleagues from the Bartlett School of Architecture. Between the years of 2021 and 2025 she additionally worked as a lecturer for academic writing at the University of Arts in Linz. Sophie has been a member of the Austrian Chamber of Architects since 2022 and completed her first built projects as an independent architect in 2024 ("Bindermeisterhaus") and 2025 ("Dachausbau Waldzell“). She founded her own practice together with Stefan Gruber in December 2025.
