Todor Aleksandrov 165 | 1000 Skopje

I am a Full Professor and Head of the Department for Dynamic Testing and Informatics at the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS), Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, North Macedonia. My professional journey has been dedicated to advancing earthquake engineering, structural resilience, structural health monitoring, and innovative technologies for seismic protection of structures.
After graduating from the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Skopje in 2003, I continued my education through the prestigious SEEFORM-DAAD International Postgraduate Programme in Earthquake Engineering at IZIIS. I obtained my MSc degree in Earthquake Engineering in 2006, specializing in Structural Control, and completed my PhD in 2014, focusing on passive structural control systems and optimal placement of energy dissipation devices in steel structures. This research laid the foundation for my long-term scientific and professional commitment to developing innovative solutions that improve the safety and resilience of the built environment.
For more than twenty years, I have actively participated in national and international research and innovation projects funded by the European Commission, including FP7 SERIES, FP7 UREDITEME, H2020 SERA, ERIES, ISRA, CRISIS, PARFORCE, NATURE-DEMO, EMERGE, and other initiatives focused on seismic resilience, disaster risk reduction, infrastructure monitoring, and climate adaptation. Through these projects, I have contributed to the development of advanced experimental methodologies, shake table testing programmes, structural monitoring systems, and innovative engineering solutions for critical infrastructure.
Today, I lead one of the most advanced experimental earthquake engineering departments in the region, managing a multidisciplinary team involved in shake table testing, structural health monitoring, numerical modelling, field investigations, and engineering consultancy. I am also the founder and principal investigator of the EQ-MOBI-LAB initiative, a national mobile laboratory for field research and rapid post-disaster damage assessment, established to strengthen emergency response and infrastructure resilience.
Alongside my research activities, I teach postgraduate and doctoral courses in Structural Control, Analysis and Design of Base-Isolated Structures and Passive Energy Dissipation Systems, Non-Structural Elements, New Technologies for Structural Design, and Experimental Mechanics and Monitoring. I have supervised young researchers and actively promote engineering education, public awareness, and the participation of women in science and engineering.
I serve as Regional Editor for Europe of the International Journal of Earthquake and Impact Engineering, Associate Editor of the ASCE Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction, Guest Editor for Frontiers in Earthquake Engineering, and member of the Scientific Board of CAPRIS – Center for Advanced and Postdoctoral Research. Throughout my career, I have authored numerous scientific publications, book chapters, and technical reports and have served as reviewer and evaluator for research, innovation, and infrastructure projects.
In parallel with my academic career, I contribute directly to engineering practice through structural safety assessment, seismic certification, implementation of Eurocodes, and participation in expert commissions responsible for evaluating the mechanical resistance, stability, and seismic protection of buildings and infrastructure in North Macedonia. I have also participated in post-earthquake reconnaissance missions and rapid safety assessment campaigns in the region.
My work has been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the Engineering Ring Award for the best graduate engineer of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Macedonian Association of Structural Engineers (MASE) Award for outstanding scientific achievement in structural engineering. These recognitions reflect my commitment to bridging scientific excellence, innovation, and engineering practice.
My professional mission is to transform research into practical engineering solutions that contribute to safer, smarter, and more resilient communities while inspiring future generations of engineers, particularly young women, to pursue careers in science, technology, and innovation.
